STEAM education at AHS within the CoLab

We live in a world that is changing more rapidly than ever before. At Arcata High School, we want to make sure our students can realize success in such a world   Success depends on the ability to think and act creatively.

To thrive, people must learn to imagine creatively, reason systematically, work collaboratively, and learn continuously.  This is true not just for individuals, but for schools, and communities.

We are doing this within a space called the CoLab, with the collaboration of the Innovation Design Institute and Arcata Arts Institute.

Learning in the CoLab focuses on preparing students for a complex world. We want to engage students in project-based learning that emphasizes creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration. Our students have learning opportunities that center around actively constructing knowledge through the art of making.

Within the CoLab Art and Science meet Design.

It is an arena that brings together all the segregated art, shop, studio, and computer facilities.

It is STEAM education where core disciplines (science, math, engineering, and the arts) can collide, sparking creativity and innovation.

It is a space where students work collaboratively and individually innovating, designing and fabricating products that improve people’s lives locally and globally.

It’s a place where students have access to teacher facilitators, industry experts, and industry standard software, technology and equipment.

Making, designing and tinkering promotes personal agency and empowers students.

Our community can shape students into productive members of our new economy.

We are creating the place and curriculum to do it!
